Your Gut and Your Nervous System Are Talking β Are You Listening?
Apr 13, 2026
There's a conversation happening inside your body right now — one most of us were never taught about in school. Your gut and your nervous system are in constant communication, sending signals back and forth through what scientists call the gut-brain axis. And if you've been feeling bloated, exhausted, anxious or just off — there's a good chance that conversation has gotten a little noisy.
I want to share something with you today that changed the way I understand my own body. Not just as a nutritionist, but as a black woman who has sat in the middle of burnout, digestive distress and a nervous system that was stuck in overdrive and found her way back to wholeness through food, intention and surrender.
The Science (Made Simple)
Your gut is home to what researchers call the enteric nervous system — a vast network of over 500 million neurons lining your digestive tract. It's so complex and so intelligent that it's often referred to as your second brain. This second brain is in direct communication with your actual brain through the vagus nerve, one of the longest nerves in your body.
Here's what that means for your everyday life:
When your gut is inflamed from things like processed foods, stress, environmental toxins or poor sleep — that inflammation sends distress signals straight to your brain. The result? Anxiety, brain fog, low mood, fatigue and a nervous system that simply cannot regulate itself the way it was designed to.
On the flip side, when you nourish your gut with whole, living foods you're not just feeding your digestive system. You're literally feeding your mind, your mood and your ability to handle stress with grace.
The Spiritual Layer
In holistic wellness, we've always known what science is only beginning to catch up to: the body keeps score. When we ignore our gut (rushing through meals, eating foods that don't serve us, suppressing our emotions) we're ignoring our intuition. The word gut feeling isn't just a metaphor. It's physiology.
Spring is the season of renewal in both nature and in our bodies. Just as the earth is releasing what winter left behind and calling in new energy, our bodies are designed to do the same. The digestive system works harder in winter processing heavier, denser foods. By the time spring arrives, it's ready to be cleared, reset, and restored.
This is why a spring reset isn't just about what you eat. It's about coming back home to your body.
Signs Your Gut-Nervous System Connection Needs Support
- You feel anxious or on edge without a clear reason
- You experience bloating, gas, or inconsistent digestion
- You're exhausted even after a full night's sleep
- You crave sugar or processed foods frequently
- You feel emotionally reactive or easily overwhelmed
- Brain fog makes it hard to focus or feel creative
If you checked even two of those, your body is asking for something different.
Where to Start
The most powerful thing you can do right now is begin reducing the inflammatory foods that disrupt gut-nervous system communication (refined sugar, processed oils, gluten-heavy foods and alcohol) while flooding your body with:
- Leafy greens rich in magnesium, nature's nervous system calmer
- Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi and coconut yogurt to rebuild gut flora
- Fiber-rich vegetables and legumes to feed the good bacteria that produce serotonin
- Fresh juices and herbal teas to gently cleanse and hydrate at the cellular level
- Healthy fats from avocado, seeds and nuts to support brain function and reduce inflammation
This isn't a deprivation diet. This is deep nourishment. And your body already knows how to heal — it just needs the right conditions.
Ready to Reset?
If you're feeling called to go deeper, I created the 2026 Spring Glow-Up Reset as a complete 14-day gut and nervous system reset rooted in whole, plant-based foods. Every recipe, every meal, every intentional choice inside the guide is designed to support exactly what we talked about today.
Your body did not end up here by accident. And it doesn't have to stay here.
