June's Best Produce for Hydration, Detox and a Body That Feels Good
Jun 01, 2026
Every season hands you a prescription.
Not the kind you pick up at a pharmacy. The kind that grows in the ground, ripens in the sun and arrives exactly when your body needs it most. June brings a wave of produce so naturally hydrating and cleansing that eating seasonally right now is one of the most powerful things you can do for your body.
This is Post #4 in my Food Is Medicine series. We've covered anxiety and stress, chronic inflammation and low energy. Today we're talking about what's on your plate right now in June and why the season itself is doing the healing work.
Why Summer Produce Is Built for Detox and Hydration
Your body detoxes continuously. Your liver, kidneys, lymphatic system and skin are working around the clock to filter waste, move toxins out and keep your cells clean. What most people don't realize is that this process requires water (a lot of it!) and specific nutrients that act as assistants for the organs doing the work.
As summer heat increases you sweat more. You lose electrolytes. Your kidneys need more fluid to filter effectively. Your skin (one of your largest detox organs) needs hydration to flush properly.
June produce answers that call directly. Most of the fruits and vegetables at peak ripeness right now are 85–95% water by composition. They come loaded with potassium, magnesium, antioxidants and plant compounds that support liver function, kidney filtration and lymphatic flow. This is not a coincidence. This is seasonal intelligence. Divine design.
What's In Season Right Now and What It Does for Your Body
Watermelon
The star of summer is 92% water and rich in lycopene, one of the most powerful antioxidants for cardiovascular and cellular health. Watermelon also contains citrulline, an amino acid that supports kidney function and helps flush excess fluid from tissues. It is cooling, alkalizing and deeply hydrating at a cellular level which is exactly what the body needs as temperatures rise.
This one gets its own moment later in this post.
Cucumber
Cucumber is 96% water — one of the most hydrating foods on the planet. It contains silica, which supports connective tissue and skin health, and cucurbitacins, plant compounds with natural anti-inflammatory and liver-protective properties. Adding cucumber to your water, salads or green juice right now is one of the simplest detox upgrades you can make.
Beets
Beets are one of the most celebrated foods for liver support in functional nutrition. Their deep red color comes from betalains which are powerful plant pigments that help the liver process and eliminate waste more efficiently. Add them to your juice, your salads or your smoothies and let them do their thing.
Blueberries
Blueberries are antioxidant powerhouses. Their deep blue color comes from anthocyanins which are compounds that protect cells from oxidative damage, support brain health and reduce systemic inflammation. They are also low glycemic, making them one of the best fruits for blood sugar stability while still satisfying a sweet craving naturally.
Peaches Peaches are rich in vitamin C, beta-carotene and potassium all of which support immune function, skin health and fluid balance. Their natural fiber content supports gut motility which is the movement of waste through the digestive tract. A body that eliminates well is a body that detoxes well.
Collard Greens Collards are one of the most nutrient-dense leafy greens in existence. They are rich in glucosinolates (sulfur-containing compounds that activate detox enzymes in the liver) as well as calcium, vitamin K and chlorophyll which supports blood cleansing and alkalinity.
Zucchini
Mild and deeply hydrating, zucchini is easy to digest and rich in B vitamins that support cellular energy and nervous system function. Its high water content makes it excellent for kidney support and its manganese content supports bone health and antioxidant enzyme production.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are another lycopene-rich summer staple with well-documented benefits for cardiovascular health and cancer prevention. Cooked tomatoes actually release more lycopene than raw so your summer sauces, roasted tomatoes and soups are medicine too.
Cherries
Cherries contain melatonin and anthocyanins that reduce inflammation, support sleep quality and ease muscle soreness. They are one of the few foods with natural anti-gout properties due to their ability to lower uric acid levels.
Mango Mango is rich in digestive enzymes — particularly amylase — that help break down carbohydrates and ease digestion. It is also high in vitamin C, beta-carotene and folate, making it one of the most nutrient-dense tropical fruits available. Choose whole mango over juice to preserve its fiber content.
I put together a complete guide to everything in season this month so you always know what to reach for at the grocery store.

Print it. Save it. Take it to the farmers market. Eating what's in season is one of the most affordable and aligned ways to support your health all year long.
A Summer Practice Worth Starting Now
Here's a simple framework for using June produce intentionally:
Morning: Start with a hydrating base of cucumber water, watermelon juice or a blueberry smoothie. You want to rehydrate before you caffeinate.
Midday: Build your plate around a leafy green (collards, arugula, spinach) with a raw or lightly cooked vegetable. Add a fruit for natural sweetness and antioxidants.
Evening: Keep it light and cooling. Summer evenings call for salads, gazpacho, zucchini dishes and fresh tomatoes. Your digestion naturally slows toward the end of the day so honor that.
Hydration all day: Half your body weight in ounces of water is the baseline. When you're eating high-water produce you're supplementing that intake naturally.

Food is medicine. And right now June is handing you some of its best.
You don't need a complicated protocol or an expensive supplement stack to support your body's natural detox processes. You need a farmers market, an intention and a plate full of what's in season.
