Why You Should Consider Doing a Daniel Fast

I’m super excited about starting the Daniel Fast on January 2nd. I’m already dusting off all my fast friendly recipes and getting my mind right.

You: Who gets excited about fasting??!

Me: *raises hand*

And here’s why you that you should too.

I completed my first 21-Day Daniel Fast in January 2007. I’ve done the fast every year since. Each Daniel Fast has been a unique life shifting experience. I’ve grown closer to God and started my year off healthier mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Every year, God honored my sacrifice and I discovered the rewards of true relationship with Him. Fasting has proven to be a natural discipline that can bring supernatural results.

What is a fast?

If you’re not familiar with fasting it’s abstaining from food, activities or entertainment for a period of time to focus on God. There are many different reasons to fast. From receiving guidance, spiritual strength and clarity or as an act of worship, the bible gives us many examples of fasting.

If you haven’t read the biblical book of Daniel, you’re missing out. It’s filled with countless life lessons and D-R-A-M-A. I’m convinced it’s the basis for the HBO smash hit series, Game of Thrones. Don’t believe me? Read this AND this. But I digress.

The Daniel Fast is based on Daniel’s experience in the bible. He was faced with many challenges including being taken captive by a powerful, short-tempered king and forced into interpreting his dreams. Long story short, he was constantly in a high pressured, my-life-is-depending-on-it situation. His weapon to successfully navigate the stress was fasting and prayer (Daniel 1:12; 10:1-2). Lots of biblical heavyweights including Moses, Elijah, Esther and even Jesus used fasting as a vehicle of petition and preparation through seeking deeper intimacy with God.
